STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. For New York City, March 14 will be a day of remembrance for its estimated more-than 25,000 people lost to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The date marks the first reported virus-related death of a New York City resident. Mayor Bill de Blasio made the announcement during his last press briefing of 2020 on Thursday.
“All the families who lost loved ones my heart goes out to you. You’re in our thoughts and prayers all the time. We know this has just been incredibly difficult,” he said. “It’s important that we have a day going forward in the future of this city to always remember what happened in 2020.”
