Declan Barrett was presented with the 2021 Cigna Victoria University Actuarial Scholarship by Cigna chief actuary Michael Bartram.
A New Plymouth man studying to join a specialised yet little known profession has been awarded a $5000 scholarship. Declan Barrett, a Francis Douglas Memorial College alumni, has received the 2021 Cigna Victoria University Actuarial Scholarship, which includes a three-month internship over the summer at Cigna. An actuary deals with the measurement of risk and uncertainty, and their work covers a range of disciplines including accounting, economics, modelling and communication. Barrett, aged 20, is in his second year at Victoria University of Wellington and is studying for a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science and Mathematics.

New Zealand has long prided itself on having an “independent” foreign policy that charts a middle path between great powers. It’s an approach for which the prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, and her new foreign minister, Nanaia Mahuta, have voiced strong support. Over the past week, however, Ardern has moved towards a much closer alignment with America.
Dr Judy Lawrence, Senior Research Fellow, Climate Change Research Institute, Victoria University of Wellington, comments:
“The total disruption we saw from the heavy rainfall over the weekend on the West Coast and Marlborough is consistent with a changing climate that is warming and able to hold more water before dumping it. We can expect more of this. It is a global phenomenon – but our exposure in New Zealand to such extreme pluvial events is a timely reminder that we not only have to prepare for them, but also plan our way out of the most severe impacts and shift from our reactive mode to anticipate where the worst effects will be felt.
