Mims has a 40-year background in transportation, serving at the FAA and the Department of Transportation during the Clinton Administration and holding roles with the Mid-Atlantic Laborers’ Employers Cooperation and Education Trust, Parsons Brinckerhoff, and Booz/Allen/Hamilton. The FAA appointed Dr. Susan Northrup as the federal air surgeon. A private pilot and retired U.S. Air Force colonel, she previously has served as acting deputy federal air surgeon and senior regional flight surgeon and also has held leadership roles on the American Board of Preventive Medicine, the U.S. delegation to NATO’s aeromedical working group, the American Society of Aerospace Medicine Specialists, and the Civil Aviation Medical Association.

Honoring local African American history at BRLC

BURNSVILLE The Burnsville Recreation and Learning Center is inviting individuals who have family members buried at the historic Poplar Springs Baptist Church to share their family’s stories to honor the local African American history. An student from Wingate University, Julia Lasure, is helping with the restoration of the historic cemetery as an intern. Lasure is working towards a degree in History. She’s been collecting information about those who are buried in the cemetery. BRLC is also hosting a diverse cultural awareness event on Feb. 28. Friends and relatives from the Burnsville Community are asked to bring a picture of their ancestors to be put on display at Poplar Springs Church during the 5 p.m. session.

NCAA May Not Accept Christian Noble’s 13:37 Division II 5K Record Due to Pacing Lights On Sunday night,  Christian Noble of Lee (Tenn.) University ran the fastest indoor time ever by a Division II 5,000-meter runner. Noble’s 13:37.39 at the Magic City Elite meet in Birmingham, Ala., was an 11-second personal best and almost four seconds faster than the previous DII best of 13:41.08, run by Abilene Christian’s  Nicodemus Naimadu 16 years ago. It was a stellar performance, run mostly alone Noble led every step of the final 15 laps after pacemaker  Garrett O’Toole stepped off the track after two kilometers.
