The YSR Congress Party made a clean sweep in the municipal elections held in Vizianagaram, Bobbili, Parvatipuram, Saluru and Nellimarla nagar panchayats.
Except for Bobbili, the TDP could not even give a fight as the candidates fielded by the ruling party won with good majority. In Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation, the results came as a shock for the TDP as it could win only one of the total 50 wards. The YSRCP candidates emerged victorious in 48 wards, while TDP candidate Karrothu Radhamani won the 49th ward. An independent canidate bagged one ward. Vizianagaram district had been as considered a bastion for the TDP till 2019 general elections.
‘Agents of all parties should cooperate with officials’
As many as 77 tables were set up to count votes polled in the Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation elections, apart from Paravatipuram, Bobbili, Saluru and Nellimarla civic bodies, according to Vizianagaram District Collector M. Hari Jawaharalal.
He said that the counting would begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday after shifting of ballot boxes to the respective counting centres from strongrooms. He reviewed the counting arrangements in all places. “As many as 90 supervisors and 207 counting assistants were trained in counting. Entire counting process will be recorded and monitored to ensure transparency. Agents of all the parties should cooperate with the officials and staff to complete the process successfully,” said Dr. Hari Jawaharlal.

As anticipated by political parties, voting percentage in the elections to the Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation was considerably lower than that recorded in other municipalities that went to the polls in the district on Wednesday.
Delay in distribution of voters’ slips, confusion over identification of polling booths and divisions are being cited as the reasons behind the low turnout of 64.50% in Vizianagaram. However, nearby Nellimarla nagar panchayat witnessed a strong turnout at 79.68% followed by Bobbili with 74.64% and Salur municipality with 72.75%.

As expected, voting percentage has not crossed even 20% by 10 a.m. in Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation, thanks to poor distribution of voters’ slips and confusion over identification of the respective polling booths.

TDP Vizianagaram Assembly in-charge Aditi Gajapathi Raju urged all voters to come to the polling booths to get their voter identity cards although many of them were not given voter slips.
In a press release, she alleged that the officials had not distributed slips in spite of repeated requests from the candidates. “The voters are worried over the poor distribution of slips. Officials should protect the voting rights of every voter in the Vizianagaram Municipal Corporation elections. TDP Mayor candidate M. Samantaka Mani urged officials to ensure free and fair elections in all divisons. She said that proper distribution of slips would ensure a higher voting percentage in all divisions.
