McConnell and his allies lead opposition to S1

(Alex Wong/Getty Images) The Senate Rules Committee gridlocked on nearly 40 proposed amendments to the For the People Act during a hearing Tuesday. Democrats were unable to strike a compromise with Republicans, dooming the bill to near-certain defeat on the Senate floor.  Democrats have prioritized the bill’s passage. It would make a wide range of changes to federal elections, including implementing a public financing system for all federal candidates, expanding vote-by-mail programs and instituting automatic voter registration.  Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), a longtime proponent of “dark money” and corporate spending, leads Republican opposition to the bill. During the hearing, he proposed an amendment to neutralize a provision requiring 501(c)(4) political nonprofits to disclose the identities of donors giving more than $10,000. The amendment failed by vote of 9-9.

Shelley Moore Capito, attend the Rules Committee markup of the elections, campaign finance and ethics overhaul known as S 1. Republicans and Democrats on an evenly divided Senate committee demonstrated Tuesday how far apart they are on political spending, voting, campaign finance, lobbying and ethics laws as they debated a sweeping 800-page bill. Charges of Democrats trying to grab power and allegations that Republicans in statehouses were seeking to disenfranchise minority voters mixed in with debates over how to mandate financial disclosure for political ads without imposing unconstitutional limits on free speech, and how to make voting easier without opening the door to bad actors who could game the system.

An outside group aligned with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is launching a seven-figure wave of TV and radio ads this week aimed to build opposition to S. 1 (117), Democrats election reform legislation. One Nation, the political nonprofit, is spending nearly $1.9 million across five states over the next 10 days, with the ads launching Tuesday to coincide with the legislation being marked up in a Senate committee. The ads are the first spending from the outside group so far in 2021, demonstrating Republicans’ focus on opposing the election legislation, which is a top priority cosponsored by nearly the entire Democratic caucus.

Kansas Republicans eye new map, easy primary as path to victory against Sharice Davids in 2022

Kansas Republicans eye new map, easy primary as path to victory against Sharice Davids in 2022 Katie Bernard and Bryan Lowry, The Kansas City Star May 3 TOPEKA Dozens of Republican activists huddled in a crowded conference room in Manhattan last month to plot the ouster of Kansas Democratic Rep. Sharice Davids, whose hold on the 3rd Congressional District prevents a GOP monopoly in the state s federal delegation. One strategy: Unite behind a candidate early to avoid a costly primary fight and count on the GOP-controlled Legislature to draw new district lines more favorable to Republicans. New lines will be essential if the party rallies around a candidate who lost to Davids by 10 points just six months ago, former Cerner executive Amanda Adkins.
