Valentine s passing was revealed by his wife, Germaine , and announced in a message issued by the ABKCO Records label. Hilton was responsible for arguably one of the most recognizable riffs in rock n roll history: the arpeggiated intro to The Animals classic 1964 version of the traditional song The House of the Rising Sun, which reached #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K. The Animals formed in 1963 in Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., and its original lineup featured Valentine, singer

Animals Guitarist Hilton Valentine Dies
Hilton Valentine, the founding guitarist of the Animals, has died at the age of 77.
The news comes to us via Valentine s wife, Germaine, via an e-mail from Bob Merlis, the publicist for the Animals label. The cause of death was undisclosed.
Born May 21, 1943 in North Shields, Northumberland, England, Hilton Valentine, like so many other British kids at the time, was smitten with skiffle. He began playing guitar at 13 after seeing Lonnie Donegan perform Rock Island Line on a television show called
The Six Five Special. He formed a group called the Heppers, and, when they switched to rock n roll, changed their name to the Wildcats.

Hilton Stewart Paterson Valentine, founding member of the U.K. rhythm and blues band The Animals, died Jan. 29. He was 77 years old.
The Animals and Valentine’s record label, Abkco Records, confirmed his passing in an Instagram post Friday. “Our deepest sympathies go out to Hilton Valentine’s family and friends on his passing this morning, at the age of 77,” the label wrote. “A founding member and original guitarist of The Animals, Valentine was a pioneering guitar player influencing the sound of rock and roll for decades to come.”
