A 20-year-old Tekoa man has been sentenced for raping a child.
The case began in late August when the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office responded to a child rape report in Tekoa. Carl Shelton admitted to the deputy that he raped an underage girl and was arrested for 2nd degree child rape.
Shelton pleaded guilty as charged to felony 2nd degree child rape in Whitman County Superior Court. Judge Gary Libey sentenced Shelton to 6 months in jail on Friday. He also received between 8 and a half years to life in prison as part of a Special Sex Offender Sentencing Alternative. If Shelton successfully completes between 3 and 5 years of sex offender treatment after he is released from jail then he will be on felony probation for life. He is also required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. If Shelton fails to complete treatment or if he violates probation, he could receive life in prison.
An 86 year old woman who was the subject of a silver alert issued by the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office has been found safe.
May Kennedy went missing from LaCrosse on Thursday night. Kennedy suffers from severe dementia. She left town in her pickup. She was found on Friday in Othello and was reunited with her family.
