Former GE Grid CEO Garcia joins SPS board - reNews - Renewable Energy News

Former president and chief executive of GE Grid Solutions Reinaldo Garcia has joined British battery storage firm Smart Power Systems (SPS) as a director.  Garcia joins after the completion of an investment round with a consortium of funders including Mark Hutchinson, former GE president of Europe and China.    SPS, a niche energy storage and power systems business, has been led by founder Dr Ian Chilvers since 2013. The company is currently delivering on contracts for its resGRID (residential battery), comGRID (commercial-scale battery) and evGRID products alongside project-specific engineering work that it is undertaking for renewable power sector clients. All of its initiatives build on Dr Chilvers’ background as a power systems engineer designing and building microgrids and battery storage systems within energy intensive industries including critical oil and gas installations since the 1990s.

A Threatened Grid can Benefit from Renewable Energy

Understanding interconnection of distributed energy resources (DERs)

By: Conformity Assessment Program Specialist The growth in distributed energy resources presents huge opportunities both in front-of-meter and behind-the-meter but the process of interconnection to the grid could still be a lot smoother, Jason Allnutt, Conformity Assessment Program Specialist for the IEEE Standards Association says. Adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) is surging around the world. DERs are bringing unique benefits to the global energy landscape that central-station power plants and long-distance transmission and distribution alone could not. DERs allow for power to be generated when and where it is most needed, and decentralising power production can contribute to a dramatically more secure and resilient facility for electricity delivery. DERs interconnected with the grid position a utility to better manage peak demand, avoid transmission overloads and keep electricity flowing to its customers.

2020, A Biggly Bad Year: At Least EVs as a Grid Resource Made Headway

765 views 2020 was a terrible year. Toward the end, a small light began to show us the way forward. Not all was dark. One of the few bright lights of 2020 was the Electric Vehicle and its battery. Who knew we would get so much done relative to vehicle-grid integration (VGI), vehicle-to-grid (V2G), and market trading? Vehicle-Grid Integration – VGI EV smart charging has been around for over a decade. The idea is to charge the EV when the grid can most afford to expend its valuable electrons. In the early days, many feared EV charging would overwhelm the grid, which would require building new coal and nuclear power plants just to keep the lights on. Now that wind, solar, hydro, and other renewables increasingly power the grid, the batteries of EVs serve as a massive sink for all that power.
