On December 16, 2020 and January 18, 2021, the Ontario Energy
Board (OEB) issued letters about the publication of expert reports
from London Economics Inc LLC (LEI) and ICF on the future of
Distributed Energy Resources (DER) projects in Ontario. The reports
emanate from the OEB s ongoing consultations designed to
evaluate how the electricity sector in Ontario should respond to
DERs (explained in our previous post).
The December 16 letter highlights the
publication of five LEI reports commissioned in September 2020. One
of these reports –

In terms of real estate and construction, stakeholders are driving the hospitality industry to bring buildings to a net-zero carbon status. Hotels with a lower carbon footprint are protecting against future climate risk while reaping the benefits of lower running costs. But owners and operators see energy efficiency modifications as having a high cost of implementation, with returns only being seen in the long-run. Technology will continue to drive improvements in energy efficiency for both existing and new buildings.
Awesense has been selected as a partner in a project involving the integration of Electric Vehicle charging stations (EVSE), Energy Storage Systems (ESS), and a microgrid controller, to analyze, manage and optimize the use of these technologies in a pilot program focused on building resiliency and reducing costs.
The goal of the project is to provide a next-generation DERMS solution with unparalleled situational awareness and the ability to make decisions and control DER based on real-time grid conditions. The joint solution, developed between Awesense and Doosan GridTech will integrate Awesense s Digital Energy platform, and Doosan s DERMS software, DERO.

A federal rule intended to lower barriers to distributed energy resources (DER) in wholesale markets still faces many questions about what DER aggregates will look like, how the new parties will interact with existing grid management, and what individual state roles might be.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission s Order 2222 doesn t limit participation in aggregating programs to particular business models and companies, speakers noted at a virtual session hosted last week by free market think-tank R Street Institute. A nonprofit could theoretically bring different DERs together, and the order might also open the door for Google or Apple to get involved in this space, something
