WINONA, Minn. Tim Gleason, a music teacher and band director in Winona Area Public Schools, has been selected to be a member of the American School Band Directors Association.
Founded in 1953, the ASBDA is a national organization for band directors whose mission is to promote, enhance and preserve quality school programs through leadership and fellowship of exemplary band directors.
ASBDA is a prominent, active, and effective national organization to influence school band programs, promoting excellence in K-12 school band programs, recognizing excellence in teaching, and attempting to provide educational research for the 21st century music classroom (another revision of its valued “ASBDA Curriculum Guide” is coming out soon).

It’s the first time WAPS has offered in-person instruction for all students since the pandemic began.
“This is a celebration of the community following all of the protocols. Avoiding large groups when possible, wearing masks staying home when you’re sick,” said WAPS Communications Coordinator John Casper. “We really have minimized the spike. I know Minnesota is kind of seeing a rise in other areas but so far in Winona that hasn’t happened and we are really grateful for that.”
The return comes as Minnesota has seen its COVID-19 case rate increase over the past month, with younger people being the driving force behind the increase, according to health officials.

Almost unanimously, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) Board members said they do not agree with a proposed amendment to Minnesota’s constitution that guarantees “All children have a fundamental right to a quality public education.” They cited concerns about language in the amendment regarding “uniform achievement standards set forth by the state” and whether WAPS would receive adequate state funding to uphold the responsibilities outlined in the amendment.
