The former Key Bank building at 107 Main St. in Winthrop has a new owner the
Winthrop Maine Historical Society, which ended a 10-year process of looking for a new home when it closed on the 2,596-square-foot building in February.
The society paid $100,000 for the building, funded through donations, including a GoFundMe page. Brokers Eben Thomas, of
Thomas Agency, and Mary Denison, of
Lake and Denison, helped seal the deal, the society said. The building will be called the Winthrop History and Heritage Center once renovations are complete (which requires more fundraising), and the society intends to make good use of two large bank vaults in the building. The building will house its extensive collection and also have display, function and gift-shop space.

According to a release from the society, in 1767, John Chandler was granted by the Committee of the Kennebeck Purchase two lots of land of two hundred acres each near the mill stream in Ponds Town with the condition that he gives bond to build a Saw Mill in one year and a Grist Mill in three years and makes on settlement on said 400 acres and another settlement on the 200 acre lot. The Agreement was signed by John Hancock himself.
2021 is going to be an awesome year for the historical society. It’s Winthrop’s Quarter-Millennial. Winthrop is 250 years old. That’s one of the various items on the agenda of the meeting.
