Josh Ward, 1JustCity’s community facilitator, said Saturday its West End site in the St. Matthews-Maryland Community Ministry, at 365 McGee St., will now be open on Saturday and Sunday through the winter until May.
Like a sneak thief in the night, COVID-19 stole into The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg undetected.
No one knows how, exactly, the virus got into the Hugo Street personal-care home; none of the 84 residents or any staff members were showing any symptoms when the first positive case came back on Dec. 6.
But the virus made its presence known with force. Little more than a month later, the numbers tell a frightening tale.
Eighteen of the 84 residents died, the latest a woman in her 60s reported Thursday. Sixty-three residents contracted the virus and have recovered. Three others have somehow managed not to get sick.

For Manitobans struggling with mental health and addiction issues, a glimmer of hope emerged in this week’s cabinet shuffle.
On Tuesday, Premier Brian Pallister split the duties of the health portfolio to create a new ministry for mental health, wellness and recovery a historic first for the province and a golden opportunity to address a long-suffering sector that has been plagued by poor access, insufficient co-ordination and inadequate funding.
A few hours after the rioting began in the U.S. Capitol on January 6, well-known Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman released a Desperate Benediction .
Chapman had been working on this song for roughly a year, but the singer felt like yesterday during the protests was the right time to release this song, calling for God s peace over the country. Words can’t describe the sadness that I feel as I watch the events currently unfolding in our country. I’m so heavy-hearted at the brokenness and division that we are witnessing and experiencing in our world today, and I am processing in the way most natural to me as a singer-songwriter: with a song, Chapman posted on Facebook along with a video of the song.
WINNIPEG Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister shuffled his cabinet Tuesday, splitting the job of health minister into two positions in the middle of a pandemic and making an historic appointment. During a ceremony at the Manitoba Legislature streamed by the province, Pallister handed new portfolios to nine members, including three who are joining the cabinet for the first time. The largest shake-up involved the health portfolio. Cameron Friesen (Morden-Winkler), who had previously served as Manitoba s Minister of Health, Seniors and Active Living, was reassigned as the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General of Manitoba. I don t think there s a person in this province who would have wanted the job he undertook to do as a leader in our health department over the last number of months. He s worked diligently and very, very hard, said Pallister.
