TN National Guard aircrew rescues stranded hiker in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park area According to a press release, this is the second search and rescue mission by the Tennessee National Guard this year. Author: Dalisa Robles (WBIR) Updated: 6:11 AM EDT May 12, 2021 TENNESSEE, USA A Tennessee Army National Guard medical flight crew responded to an emergency air evacuation mission after a victim suffered from difficulty breathing while hiking in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park area on May 9, officials said. Officials said that shortly before 7 a.m., the Tennessee Military Department and Tennessee Emergency Management Agency were notified of a hiker in distress near the Tri Corner Knob Shelter along the Appalachian Trail. 

Mill Valley Korea and Vietnam veterans highlighted

This past March the students conducted interviews of World War II veterans James Kloos and Ray Lawson. This month they are making videos of Vietnam veteran John Newsom; and Korean War veteran Richard Dagitz. The veteran project is part of Marquette’s Computers II class where students learn about different types of multi-media. Some of the topics the class covers are photos and photo editing, desktop publications such as brochures and programs, video taking and movie creation, in addition to audio editing for putting together podcasts or radio commercials. DVIDS - News - Alaska Army National Guard rescues four boaters stranded on Kuskokwim River

11 A UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter aircrew with the Alaska Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 207th Aviation Regiment, rescued four individuals and a dog this morning after they became stuck in a boat on the Kuskokwim River near Bethel, Alaska. At approximately 1:00 a.m., the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center on JBER contacted the 207th AVN, stating that the Alaska State Troopers had asked for assistance with the rescue mission of four stranded boaters. “The individuals were stuck on the river between Bethel and Kwethluk because of break-up,” explained Lt. Col. Michele Edwards, State Army Aviation Officer, Alaska Army National Guard. “There were areas of ice blocking them from going further.”

Army launches animated series The Calling to reach Generation Z

An aviation soldier with ties to Southern Pines is featured in a new Army animated series released on YouTube last week.   “The Calling” was launched “to help close the relatability gap between Generation Z and America’s largest military branch,” according to a news release about the series.   “Research tells us that young people today see the Army as a ‘distant star’  a place requiring a nearly superhuman level of discipline with little relevance to their daily lives,” Maj. Gen. Alex Fink, Chief of Army Enterprise Marketing, said in the news release. “Similarly, youth don’t necessarily connect with those who serve or see common ground in terms of interests, abilities, and goals.
