33 years ago, on March 14 1988, 64 Vietnamese soldiers sacrificed their lives in the battle of protecting Gac Ma (Johnson South), Colin and Len Dao (Lansdowne) Reefs, part of the Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago.
HQ-505, the only ship that was not sunk in the battle, was commanded by the captain to crash onto Co Lin Reef after it was shot to fire by the enemy ship, becoming a sovereignty landmark of Vietnam. Hanoi (VNA) – The
Defence Ministry held a ceremony on March 12 to present the President’s decision
to send Lieut. Col Tran Duc Huong from the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping
Operations, to take up a position at the United Nations headquarters in New
York.
Accordingly, Huong will serve
as Planning Officer in the Office of Military
Affairs under the Department of Peace Operations at the UN headquarters in New
York.
