Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a virtual summit with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc on December 21.
Besides their antipathy towards China, both sides have shared warm political ties since the Cold War.
During the Summit, the two leaders will exchange views on wide-ranging bilateral, regional and global issues and provide guidance for the future development of India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, said a PMO news release.
Before Covid cut short in-person visits, Vice-President of Vietnam Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh had come to India in February. Both the Prime Ministers had a telephonic conversation on April 13.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold Virtual Summit with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Monday, December 21, Vietnam’s Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang has announced. This will be the first such virtual summit of PM Modi with an ASEAN country. Vietnam is the chair of the ASEAN grouping this year and in the recent years, there have been a high number of engagements and visits between the two countries.
During the Summit, the two leaders will exchange views on wide-ranging bilateral, regional and global issues and provide guidance for the future development of India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Indian President Ram Nath Kovind had visited the country in 2018 and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu in 2019. President of Vietnam Tran Dai and PM Phuc both were in India in 2018.

Around 27 outcomes in the form of a memorandum of understanding, agreements will be announced on Monday at India, Vietnam virtual summit between Indian PM Narendra Modi and Vietnam s PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc. This is the first such virtual summit of PM Modi with an ASEAN country.
The announcements will be on a range of issues from defence to energy to development partnership to healthcare. On Defence, a key focus will be on implementation of India’s Defence Line of Credit for high-speed guard boats for Vietnam. New Delhi has in the past extended defence Lines of Credit worth USD 600 million to strengthen Vietnam’s domestic defence manufacturing.

New Delhi [India], December 20 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a virtual summit with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Monday to discuss the future development of the comprehensive strategic partnership.
According to sources, this summit caps the series of high-level exchanges with Vietnam this year, which witnessed the visit of Vietnam s Vice President to India, in February and the telephonic conversation between the two Prime Ministers in April to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic. The two Prime Ministers also met online during the 17th ASEAN-India Summit last month.
India, Vietnam expected to ink pacts to expand ties at virtual summit on Monday
NEW DELHI: India and Vietnam are likely to seal a number of agreements and make certain announcements to further expand overall ties including in areas of defence, energy and healthcare at a virtual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Monday, official sources said.
The evolving situation in the Indo-Pacific is expected to figure prominently in the talks as both countries have shared interest in a free, open, peaceful, prosperous and a rules-based regional order, they said.
In the summit, the two sides are also likely to issue a joint vision for future development of ‘India-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ with an aim to chart a new course of enhanced cooperation in a range of areas, they said.
