Laos to get renewed New Zealand funding for UXO response

Under the most recent project between 2016 and 2020, New Zealand focused its support on addressing the UXO problem in Xieng Khuang, which is the second most contaminated province in Laos. VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): The Government of New Zealand will provide an additional four years of funding through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) from 2021 to 2024 totalling NZ$10,300,000 (over US$7.3 million or over 68 billion kip) for the UXO sector in Laos. New Zealand will continue its support to UXO Lao’s operations in Xieng Khuang province under this new four-year commitment, including its Area Clearance, Non-Technical and Technical Survey and Mine Risk Education activities, according to a press release from UNDP.

Unicef provides Laos with Covid-response learning materials

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Unicef has provided education materials worth more than 33.6 billion kip (US$3.6 million) to help implement the Education Response Plan of the Ministry of Education and Sports. The materials provided to the ministry consist of textbooks, teachers’ guides and other learning materials for use by about 760,000 children from pre-primary to secondary school levels, and over 35,000 teachers across the country, and are valued at more than 20.5 billion kip (US$2.2 million). Additionally, almost one million children in kindergarten, pre-primary and primary schools will receive soap, cleaning and other hygiene materials to support Covid-19 prevention measures in schools, worth more than 13 billion kip (US$1.4 million).

Japan boosts cross-border management in Laos with financial aid
