US gives Laos US$700,000 to bolster fight against malaria

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): The United States has provided US$700,000 to Population Services International in support of the Ministry of Health and the Strengthening Surveillance to Accelerate Malaria Elimination project in Laos. The grant will be a significant boost to the project, which is part of the Impact Malaria Programme taking place in Laos from 2021 to 2023. A grant agreement was signed on Wednesday by the Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control under the Ministry of Health, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh, and PSI Country Director Viengsamay Vongkhamsao Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister of Health Dr Sanong Thongsana, USAID Country Office Representative to Laos, Michael Ronning, and a representative of the US President’s Malaria Initiative, along with senior ministry officials and other invited guests.

Lao PM calls for stronger support for business

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh told business operators attending the13th Lao Business Forum in Vientiane on Wednesday (July 28) that the government is determined to work with the public and private sectors to address unresolved issues. The aim of the forum was to review progress made in public-private dialogue to improve the business environment, as a follow-up to the 12th Lao Business Forum. Speaking at the meeting, the prime minister praised the private sector for its successful preparations for the forum and the well-prepared agenda. “The unresolved issues outlined by the private sector during dialogue in relation to the improvement of the business environment are based on facts concerning these continuing problems,” Phankham said.

Laos plans Johnson & Johnson vaccine rollout for Aug 2

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Health workers plan to begin administering the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine across the country on August 2, although vaccinations in some priority areas got under way on July 26, according to the Centre of Information and Education for Health. These areas were prioritised because of high infection rates and low vaccine uptake, and include Champassak, Savannakhet, Khammuan and Saravan provinces. Director General of the Department of Hygiene and Health Promotion under the Ministry of Health, Dr Phonepaseuth Ounaphome, said the main rollout of the 1,008,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson was scheduled to begin on Aug 2 after the vaccine had been delivered to provincial health authorities.
