Govt, WHO defend use of AstraZeneca vaccine in Lesotho

Govt, WHO defend use of AstraZeneca vaccine in Lesotho Herbert Moyo HEALTH Minister Semano Sekatle and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have defended the planned use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in Lesotho, saying it would be highly effective against more severe symptoms of the Covid-19 disease. In an exclusive interview with the Lesotho Times this week, Mr Sekatle and WHO representative in Lesotho, Richard Banda, said Basotho should not read too much into reports that the vaccine had been found to be ineffective against the South African variant, of the deadly disease also known as B.1.351 or 501.V2. They said South Africa had only released preliminary findings based on a study of the effectiveness of the vaccine in just a tiny fraction of that country’s estimated 58, 6 million population.

300,000 Vaccinated against COVID-19

705 The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has vaccinated about 300,000 people since the exercise to vaccinate Ghanaians against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic started a week ago. Data gathered electronically indicate that as of 8 p.m. last Sunday, 202,252 people had taken their first dose of the vaccine, with a one-third of the number yet to be captured. “As I said, about a third of this number is still being entered. I say that given the enthusiasm with which Ghanaians wanted to get vaccinated, we needed to slow down, so not everything was entered. “We used manual paper data and recorded some electronically, and as they synchronise the data, we will provide you with additional data. One can confidently say that we are doing almost 300,000 by the time we sink all the data,” the Director-General of the GHS, Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, disclosed yesterday at the Ministers’ Press Briefing at the Presidential Villa, Peduase Lodge, near Aburi in the Eastern Region.

Vaccination for Covid | Political Economy

March 7, 2021 With a routine immunisation coverage of 88 percent, AJK is one region that has remained polio free for the last two decades Visiting Muzaffarabad after 16 years was quite an experience. The last I saw this place was when an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude shook the entire region on October 8, 2005. After nearly 16 years the city seemed stronger. Its social indicators show that too. One of those is its literacy rate of 67 percent among its women compared to the national average of 51 percent. Dr Bushra Shams, the provincial programme manager of Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), the only woman in the country heading an immunisation programme, has health scores for children to prove her mettle.
