Dorset open gardens this bank hoilday | Great British Life

Dorset is home to some beautiful gardens that are too good to miss - Credit: bluecorvette, Flickr An open garden event is the perfect way to spend this May bank holiday. We ve picked out three happening in Dorset which look truly gorgeous! The National Garden Scheme is a fantastic organisation that encourages private gardens to open up a few days of the year for public viewing. Not only that, but the money made from admissions, tea, and cake all go back into the community through donations to nursing and health charities. In 2020, they donated almost £3 million to Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, The Queen’s Nursing Institute, and many more.

Teddy Jamieson: Strathcarron Hospice, the Wallace Monument and how we fund end-of-life care

The monument lit up to celebrate 40 years of Strathcarron Hospice ON Wednesday night I went for a drive to see the Wallace Monument. As I crossed the Clackmannanshire Bridge, the light was soft but clear and I could see the Ochils and beyond them the Trossachs stretching away – forever, it seemed – to the north and west. In the middle distance the Wallace was silhouetted in the golden light. Since moving to central Scotland in the early 1980s, the Wallace has been one of the most familiar landmarks in my own personal geography. On Wednesday it was lit up in blue light along with a number of other public buildings in the Forth Valley – including Callendar House and the Kelpies in Falkirk and the Arria statue (or Diana Ross as she is known in our house) in Cumbernauld – to mark the 40th anniversary of Strathcarron Hospice in nearby Denny.

Agenda: It s time to make bereavement care a priority

By Helen Malo IN a nation where talking about death and dying can still feel like a taboo, Covid-19 and the consequential death-laden headlines have made us face up to the, often, uncomfortable realities about the care and support we would want for ourselves and our loved ones at the end of life. And the reality is - these issues are very important and need to be addressed. Never before in this generation have we witnessed the amount of death as during the pandemic. It is suggested that for each person that dies, five people – their loved ones, family and friends – are left dealing with grief and bereavement. With 9,997 registered Covid-19 deaths in Scotland to date (as of April 4), more than 49,000 are likely to have been bereaved as a result. That is a staggering amount, and the direct impact on families, carers and wider society has been immense, bringing the challenges of grief and bereavement into sharp focus.

Five Hertfordshire gardens opening to public this month | St Albans & Harpenden Review

Five beautiful gardens in Hertfordshire are opening to the public this month. Five of Hertfordshire s most beautiful gardens will once again open their gates to the public later this month. On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th April, budding gardeners of every taste will be able to wander around some of the most picturesque gardens the county has to offer. Among them is a plant-lover s paradise in Letchworth Garden City, an informal orchard in Wheathampstead, and a formal garden around a modern classical house in Bedmond.  There is also a contemporary space behind a 1930s semi in St Albans, as well as The Old Rectory in Sarratt - a wild 20-acre garden with specimen trees, a sculpture collection and semi-ancient woodland with a stunning view over the Chess valley and the Chilterns.
