Just days before state legislators are scheduled to meet to discuss how to spend up to $800 million in coronavirus relief funding, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners on Thursday issued a call to arms in support of local businesses hit hard by COVID-19.
The board asked local and state officials, as well as local chambers of commerce, city councils and business leaders to rally behind a business reopening plan recently submitted to Gov. Kate Brown and state lawmakers by the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce.
âAs fellow citizens and business owners, we share in the frustration that our local businesses, families and residents are dealing with,â Douglas County Commissioner Tom Kress said in a news release. âThe last nine months have been challenging to say the least, and now more than ever before our local businesses need your support, and a united front backing them with a solid, productive plan that will provide relief and a future for their livelihoods. CHAMPAIGN â More than 30 monetary awards from the Hospitality Relief Fund of the Visit Champaign County Foundation have been given to people in the hospitality industry who have lost their job or are facing reduced hours due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Business owners and general managers from restaurants, hotels, event venues and retail nominated the workers.
It marks the second round of the awards. More than $11,000 has been raised from 40 individual contributions in addition to the initial contribution from the foundation. United Way of Champaign County also made a $5,000 donation.
A lottery system is being used to determine award winners. Recipients are current or past employees from area shops, restaurants, hotels, venues and attractions that include Boomerangs Bar & Grill, PoâBoys Restaurant, Rose Bowl Tavern, The Blind Pig Brewery, CU Adventures in Time & Space, Hilton Garden Inn, Neil St. Blues and Esquire Lounge.

Right now, the proposal includes amnesty from State Liquor Authority Fines, commercial rent relief and a Businesses Interruption bill (S2811/A10226) that mandates insurance companies to cover losses due to the pandemic. It also creates a Hospitality Relief Fund that requires all insurers to issue general liability policies in New York to contribute to the fund. The lawmakers want to create a temporary Hospitality Businesses Relief Insurance Credit for businesses already insured under commercial general liability.
