After weeks where covid-19 cases tumbled by as much as 78 percent while vaccination numbers tripled, the latest national trends show a 20 percent increase in cases over the past 14 days. Hospitalizations are increasing in some places, most notably in Michigan. A fourth surge is here in some states, fueled by premature relaxation of pandemic control measures in regions with low natural immunity and without adequate vaccination rates, along with some increase caused by the spread of more transmissible variants.
