Study focuses on assessing mental and physical health of undergraduates during the pandemic An ongoing study led by North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University focuses on assessing the mental, emotional and physical health of undergraduates during the pandemic - in order to determine how universities can better support their students. The study involves students at NC State, North Carolina A&T State University, University of Iowa, and Duke University. The pandemic is making us evaluate and reinvent the college experience, at least temporarily, says Julie Ivy, principal investigator (PI) of the study. For example, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of social connection. How we can facilitate social connection when every course is online?

Husker researcher studies derecho impact with eye toward improving silo design

UNL Office of Research and Economic Development LINCOLN, Neb. On Aug. 10-11, 2020, a derecho swept across the Plains, producing widespread high, straight-line winds; extreme, torrential rain and hail; and an outbreak of weak tornadoes. The storm killed at least four and left behind significant damage in agricultural areas along a 750-mile path. In fact, its estimated $7.5 billion toll made it the most damaging thunderstorm event in American history. It was also largely unnoticed outside the Corn Belt at a time when the presidential election, pandemic and racial unrest were dominating the news. “This was a huge event, but it didn’t receive much coverage, which was one of the huge motivators for me to study it,” said Christine Wittich, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
