Scour refers to watery or custard-like faeces and results from a badly damaged gut, which leads to a loss in function. An intestine that is not functioning properly causes the calf to lose salts and water in the form of diarrhoea, according to Animal Health Ireland (AHI).
It said that the initial damage to the gut is caused by a variety of infectious agents, including parasites, viruses and bacteria. Once the damage is done, the calf will continue to scour until the intestine is repaired.
AHI outlined that the best way of dealing with a scouring calf is by following the “1, 2, 3” rule.

On the final day of the Animal Health Ireland and Teagasc Calf Care virtual week, the focus was milk feeding the young calf.
Teagasc researcher Emer Kennedy outlined the importance of feeding 6L of milk to calves per day. She highlighted the importance of following the correct guideline for making up the milk replacer by following the guidelines of the product being used.
Feeding milk replacer is common practice on many farms. There is a wide range of milk replacer powders available, each with their advantages and disadvantages on nutritional content and cost.
Some milk powders are suited to specific rearing systems so it is important to match the powder to the system employed.

As part of the Animal Health Ireland & Teagasc Calf Care Virtual Week, Teagasc researcher Emer Kennedy and Joe Patton, Teagasc nutritionist, discussed the guidelines for feeding milk and concentrates to calves.
The primary goal of the rearing phase is to double the birth weight of the calf by 56 days of age. Good nutrition is fundamental to animal health, welfare and productivity.
The type of liquid feed given to calves following colostrum is transition milk. The feeding of this depends on the farm targets, milk price, milk availability, disease status of the farm and labour availability.
