A year after dropping July 13, as the public holiday, authorities sealed off the martyrs’ graveyard in Srinagar’s Khawaja Bazaar to prevent a routine ceremonial tribute by Kashmir political parties. Kashmir has been observing the day since 1931 when 22 civilians were mowed down by Maharaja troops when they assembled to witness a political trial. NC and PDP said they had applied for formal permission from the Collector’s office but it was rejected.

In what is being hailed as a landmark judgment in the field of animal law, the Delhi high court recently held that animals have a right under law to be treated with compassion, respect and dignity. It further held that community dogs (also referred to as stray or street dogs) have a right to food, and citizens have the right to feed them.
