Once in Israel, the animals are loaded onto trucks for journeys that can take hours to slaughterhouses or to pre-slaughter fattening facilities. They are treated with antibiotics against the infections that overcrowding encourages.
In May last year, the state comptroller panned the Agriculture Ministry for failing to investigate problems relating to live shipments and for failing to punish shipowners or importers who repeatedly broke the rules. Furthermore, said the report, not enough was being done to monitor, deal with and develop new plans to limit the spread of diseases that can jump from livestock to infect humans.

Lawmakers from seven political parties and a candidate for an eighth faced an online audience of more than 600 people on Sunday to outline their views on animal protection, in the run-up to the March 23 elections.
Environmental Protection Minister Gila Gamliel (Likud) headed the roster of speakers invited by the not-for-profit groups Animals Now and Let the Animals Live.
Gamliel said she was waiting for the Justice Ministry to finish work on draft regulations published by her ministry in October that seek to ban wildlife trade for the fashion industry.

Filthy conditions were revealed Monday at one of the country’s main chicken processing plants in the northern city of Kiryat Shmona.
An investigation by Channel 20 TV used whisteblower footage from a month ago showing piles of carcasses, many of them on the floor, of an Off HaGalil (Galilee Chicken) plant. Other footage showed an inspector sitting idly rather than checking production.
Off Hagalil defended its practices and said the footage misrepresented the inspection and supervision process.
