Region reports record number of new COVID-19 cases in a month as vaccine arrives
Waterloo region reported 96 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the total for this month to 1,517. That makes December the month with the highest number of new cases reported for the community.

KITCHENER About a year ago, the first murmurs were heard of a mysterious illness spreading in the Chinese city of Wuhan. By January of 2020, the first case of COVID-19 had reached Canada. Two months later, Waterloo Region identified its first case after two people had returned from Italy. What followed next would be nine months of illness and heartbreak, but also resilience and hope. Here is a look back at 2020 and how COVID-19 has shaped our lives this year.

March 3: After making headlines around the globe for weeks, COVID-19 finally reached Waterloo Region after the region’s first case returned from a trip to Italy.
WATERLOO Cheating and other academic misconduct is on the rise at universities and colleges as students shift to online learning during the pandemic. My friends have told me a couple of stories about people they know who have cheated, said University of Waterloo student Matthew Mure. Some students said cheating is easier when they re not in a physical classroom. Take turns taking exams if there are different times or be on a call together, Mure said. UW s Office of Academic Integrity said COVID-19 has been a contributing factor when it comes to students breaking the rules. The stress of the pandemic has really exacerbated the pressure that s put on students, so it s led to the increase of academic misconduct, Amanda McKenzie with the office said.

The year 2020 has given more to the authors of history textbooks than it has to the writers of diaries. Decades from now, scholars will have a wealth of material for their accounts of this pivotal time, but when the people who lived through it look back on the timelines of their personal lives, many of them will find a gap where 2020 should be.
For all its eventfulness, 2020 has for many been a lost year, in several senses of the word: On top of an enormous loss of human lives, the pandemic paused many people’s progress on long-plotted family and career goals. It forced countless celebrations and holiday gatherings either onto Zoom or out of existence. And it warped many people’s sense of time, causing months-long stretches to seem interminable in the moment but like they passed in a blip in retrospect.
