New York State Police said the suspect, identified as Jason D. Johnson, 34, no address given, was spotted around 4:30 p.m. Thursday and taken into custody near a river bank off state Route 79.
Johnson is accused of shooting Trooper Becky Seager, a seven-year veteran of the New York State Police assigned to the Binghamton barracks.
The incident developed shortly after 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when representatives from the state police and Broome County Sheriff s Office responded to 1348 E. Windsor Road in the Town of Colesville to check on the welfare of a person, state police said.
Responding officers reportedly found a man with a long gun who disappeared into the woods. Gunshots were fired in the woods a short time later.
New York State Trooper Becky Seager who was shot during a welfare check in Colesville was greeted by a sea of law enforcement at her release from the hospital.
Her injuries are considered non-life-threatening, state police said.

Johnson is described as 5 feet, 7 inches tall and a160 pounds, according to state police. His hair is in a long Mohawk style.
Troopers said Johnson was last seen in the East Windsor Road area near Thorn Hill.
Johnson is considered armed and dangerous, troopers said.
Troopers said Johnson was possibly operating a blue 1996 Ford F-250 pick-up truck, with the New York state license plate HZV7759.

Due to the investigation, the Windsor and Harpursville school districts switched to remote learning Thursday.
