Mental health support for children in North Somerset

Published: 8:34 AM February 1, 2021    Parents and carers are encouraged to look out for signs of poor mental health in their children. - Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto Parents and carers are being encouraged to talk to their children about how they are feeling as part of Children’s Mental Health Week.  Around three children in every primary school class has a mental health problem, and many more struggle with challenges from bullying to bereavement.  Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS (AWP) Trust is encouraging young people to think about how they are feeling, and explore ways they can express themselves, during the awareness week which runs from February 1-7.

Protect Drews Pond, Save Greenacres plead residents

DEVIZES people have called for a special area of land near Drews Pond and its nature reserve to be protected. The land at Greenacres has been included as a potential development site in the town’s local development plan. The land borders the former railway line and locals say it has become a haven for bats, birds and deer. Pheasants and squirrels were spotted foraging there when the Gazette visited the site. Angela Taylor, who moved to Devizes from Cornwall , said: “You rarely get space like this, it’s really special. I’m disabled, and it’s also one of the few green places I can access and enjoy properly, I really don’t want to lose it.

Salisbury Hospital receives £3 4m to improve facilities

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £3.4million to upgrade the hospital s facilities. The funding is a portion of the £45.8million awarded to 21 NHS trusts in the South West to fund 199 maintenance projects. These include new or refurbished buildings to deliver key services, replacing hospital lifts, upgrading electrical infrastructure, work to improve fire safety and enhancing ventilation systems. Salisbury District Hospital has received £3.4million, including £1.3million for water system upgrades. Andy Hyett, Chief Operating Officer at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust said: We’re really pleased to receive this funding as it will be used to carry out essential repairs across the hospital.
