Zurich Community Trust s generosity helps community foundation keep voluntary groups working

VOLUNTARY groups tackling the fallout from the pandemic have been helped by a £25,000 handout. The Zurich Community Trust has made a second donation to Wiltshire Community Foundation’s Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund, which has awarded more than £1 million through more than 200 grants to groups across the county. The Swindon insurance giant donated the same amount through its trust last April and the community foundation’s joint chief executive Fiona Oliver said its support has been vital in helping voluntary groups respond to demand from people impacted by the crisis. “We are very thankful for this support from Zurich, who have always shown huge generosity and awareness of the needs of the community,” she said. “We have seen many groups struggling to keep going after having to overcome so many challenges. They are seeing huge spikes in demand at same time as losing vital revenue and eating into their reserves.

Bottles, bags and litter dumped in west Swindon nature reserve

Rubbish, including bottles and plastic bags, have been found across Hagbourne Copse in Blagrove on several occasions. Now, West Swindon parish councillors have agreed to install three new litter bins in a bid to tackle the problem. West Swindon parish clerk Paula Harrison said: “We raised some concerns over the high volume of litter on the verges and inside the copse and the overnight stays of HGV trucks. “In the past few months, the parish council and Wiltshire Wildlife Trust have clearing waste and refuse from the copse. “This week the borough council was planning to reduce the shrubbery around the perimeter of the copse and WWT will follow up with work to weave and tidy the outside.

Dozens object to plans for storage facility opposite Braydon nature reserve | The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald

Ravensroost Woods More than 100 objections have been lodged against a bid for commercial and machinery storage opposite a nature reserve. The barns, owned by Wedgewood Construction, house old caravans, but the company wants to change the use of an agricultural building and stables to commercial and machinery storage and a site office. But neighbours and a parish council have objected to the scheme at Braydon, near Malmesbury, fearing the road is not suitable for the amount or type of traffic it might generate. And they fear the extra traffic will have an adverse effect on wildlife at the Ravensroost Wood reserve.
