(WDAM) - Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker plans to allow the city’s mask mandate to expire on Saturday. Barker extended the order in April, saying that it would be the last time if COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations remained low in the metro area. The extension covered the remainder of the spring semesters for William Carey University and the University of Southern Mississippi. During his daily virtual briefing Friday, Barker said that he will not be renewing the mask order once it expires at 5 p.m. Saturday.

More than 50 students graduated in a brief ceremony Friday morning at the Thomas Fine Arts Auditorium. It was one of three that were scheduled for the Hattiesburg campus on Friday. Three more commencement ceremonies are set for Saturday on the Hattiesburg campus and two others are scheduled for May 17 in Gulfport.

This years recipient was Joyce Hicks, owner of Blooms, a florist shop in Hattiesburg “I’m honored to be the 29th recipient of the Small Business Leadership Awar,” Hicks said. “They feel like I’m a great part of Hattiesburg business. We have been in business for 27 years, and we love our customers, love doing what we do.”
