When World War II ended, many Jews gravitated to displaced persons (DP) camps in Germany. These camps were designed to be temporary homes, but many Jews remarkably ended up living in them for five years.
These five years are the subject of a recently-published book,
The Last Million: Europe’s Displaced Persons from World War to Cold War. Its author, David Nasaw, is a professor emeritus at the CUNY Graduate Center and the author of highly-regarded biographies of Joseph Kennedy, Andrew Carnegie, and William Randolph Hearst.

Believe it or not, there once was a time when journalists were celebrities. It wasn t just talking heads on TV or social media influencers, either these were real investigative journalists risking life and limb to bring you the unvarnished truth about everything from slum life to factory work. In the late 1800s through the 1920s, there was no radio or television your social media chatter consisted of what you overheard at the store or, if you were rich, at dinner parties. So newspapers were the main way of getting information and newspaper publishers wanted to sell as many copies as possible.

On Feb. 3, 2021, CNN published by Eliott C. McLaughlin that placed the Communist Party USA alongside Trump’s Jan. 6 Capitol mob and a neo-Nazi organization as the only groups to have “attempted to stage a coup against the United States of America.” CNN and McLaughlin have their history wrong, very wrong.
