When Shelby Fire Chief William Hunt decided on a career path, he was serving as a volunteer firefighter. Realizing he already had his foot in the door and a wealth of knowledge, he transitioned into becoming a full-time employee. As the Shelby Fire and Rescue Department looks to grow its team, Hunt wants applicants to remember being a firefighter does not have to be a calling, but it does require commitment to developing and sharpening skills that could potentially save someone’s life.   “We want people that are dedicated to having a lifelong career of service,” said Hunt. “It’s constant training and reapplying that training. That is a big commitment. It is not one of those jobs where you get a little bit of training and then you don’t go back to school. We train to keep our skills up.”
