Last time on The Devil Judge Seon-ah had kidnapped Yo-han for apparently erotic purposes. I d been dreading the follow-up to this because, as I ve noted, the political elements tend to be stronger than the personal elements in this drama. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the encounter between antagonist and anti-hero was mostly about manipulation and intimidation. But with the hilarious twist that Seon-ah and Yo-han s backstory reads like backstory for a romantic comedy-drama.

The gothic undertones are not especially subtle. Yo-han is the tragically hated illegitimate son of the brooding master. Seon-ah was the enthusiastic young maid with a penchant for being accused of petty theft. The young Seon-ah s cheerful sociopathy is hilarious. In a moment of bonding with Ga-on, Elijah also mentions the story of how her uncle once made the family maid jump out the window. The actual context behind that story ends up proving extremely appropriate for Seo

Of possibly greater interest than The Wind From Nowhere itself is the documentary s availability. In general South Korean streaming services are not user-friendly for foreigners either in or out of the country. But Purplay holds the distinction of not requiring a South Korean Internet connection, ID Card, phone number, or payment method. Provided you can read the Korean language menus, registering as a foreigner isn t too difficult and you can recharge the account via PayPal.

Although the selection on Purplay is a bit eclectic to say the least. They re all short films with a feminist bent or similar. In terms of movies that are even covered here on HanCinema, the only other two listed here at all are

Na-bi and Jae-eon do not interact for this entire episode. Jae-eon does attempt to contact her a few times, but by and large Na-bi just relaxes back at home and mostly successfully tries to avoid thinking about Jae-eon. There s plenty of cuteness involved with Do-hyeok, as the two have pleasant excursions. But the most interesting character ends up being Na-bi s aunt Jeong-sook (played by

In her brief appearance Jeong-sook offers some explanation on Na-bi s home life. We ve seen already that Na-bi s mother isn t exactly all that attentive as a mother. But Jeong-sook has a more forgiving perspective of her sister s behavior. As Jeong-sook puts it, to Na-bi s mother, love isn t about finding the person who s nicest to you, but rather the one who s most special to you. And it was only through this life philosophy that she was able to give birth to Na-bi.

Ha-rin (played by
Yeri) is a perky teenage girl living in 2011. Ha-rin s about to have the best birthday ever, because she s finally resolved to confess to her best friend Seo-joon (played by
Hongseok), a taciturn boy who takes film photos but rejects his friends requests that he take photos of them. In a particularly grim opening we learn that Ha-rin never does get to tell Seo-joon how she feels. Ten years later, she works in animal rescue.

The latest project from Playlist Studios, Blue Birthday sticks out for having appealing leads and a markedly effective wardrobe department. The older Ha-rin actually looks like a markedly different person than the younger one, a feat so difficult to achieve with the same actress that most productions don t even bother trying. I was likewise surprised to learn that
