What happened: Council again tabled a proposal to remove seniority points from the promotion process in the cityâs police and fire bureaus after spending 1 hour and 20 minutes discussing and hearing comment on the issue that returns to council in August. A vote was originally slated for May 25.
Background: Mayor Danene Sorace and the cityâs fire chief and interim police chief spoke at past meetings in favor of removing the seniority points. Leaders of the fire and police unions argued against it.
Administrationâs case: Jess King, Soraceâs chief of staff, this time spoke in lieu of the mayor who was attending McCaskey High Schoolâs graduation. âWeâre here proposing this change because of the challenges made by council and members of the public in response to the death of George Floyd more than a year ago,â King said. âThe mayor made commitments to advance racial equity in the

Wayne-based Berger Rental Communities now intends to construct an 11-story building on a parking lot at the northwest corner of North Queen and West Chestnut streets, not the 16-story structure it proposed last August.
The revised plan, which was presented to the city Historical Commission on Monday, decreases the height by 55 feet from 198 feet (third tallest in the county) to 143 feet (seventh tallest). It also trims the number of apartments from 168 units to 117.
