Chasey and Scott Branton of McMinnville were expecting their first born to arrive several days into 2021. Her due date was not until Saturday, Jan. 9.
But it was decided labor would be induced last Wednesday; with the Willamette Valley Medical Center Birthing Center as busy as it was, the procedure was moved to Thursday.
So, Scott drove his wife to the hospital about 3:45 p.m. New Year’s Eve. At 9:03 a.m. Friday, they welcomed Connor into the world and their family, giving the hospital its first baby of 2021. The baby boy was born 20 1/2 inches and weighed 8 pounds and 9 ounces

With the global coronavirus pandemic, there has been national attention on laboratory testing. The need for highly qualified individuals to do complex laboratory testing has never been more evident, and 39 new medical lab science professionals entered this workforce after graduating Saturday from a rigorous bachelor’s degree program between Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).

County gets extra-cold freezer from university
Linfield University has donated one of the freezers from its biology lab to Yamhill County Public Health for storing the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine when it arrives. The vaccine must be kept in ultra-cold conditions, -70 degrees Celsius, which is colder than standard freezers can achieve.
“We are grateful for the wonderful partner Linfield University has been throughout the COVID-19 event and their willingness to share this much needed asset,” said County Health and Human Services Director Lindsey Manfrin in a press release. “This is one more example of our great community working together.”
COVID outbreak at Mac care center tied to 11 deaths, dozens of cases
The positive news this week that COVID-19 vaccines were on the way was dampened by the report of 10 new deaths in Yamhill County, a 50% increase to the local toll that is now at 30.
Yamhill County Public Health released a press release Thursday afternoon stating that 11 recent COVID deaths are tied to an outbreak at Majorie House Memory Care Community in McMinnville; and 35 more people there have tested positive. Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this incredibly sad situation we find ourselves in, said Health and Human Services Director Lindsey Manfrin.

Lane remains in extreme risk category, total case count surpasses 6,000
Lane County Public Health reported 128 new confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 Friday, bringing the county s total to 6,028.
The county also reported one new coronavirus-related death in its daily announcement Friday, making a total of 80 residents who have died because of the virus.
Forty residents are currently hospitalized for COVID-19, down by six from Thursday s count. Nine of these individuals are in intensive care, when there were 11 people in the ICU on Thursday.. Lane County remains in the extreme risk category, and will stay there until at least Jan. 1, when county risk levels are reassigned.
