Illegally passing school bus in Broome County, NY will cost $250

Motorists caught on camera breaking the law would not get points on their driver’s license or be penalized by their insurance company, officials said, but the program was praised as another tool to keep students safe and educate drivers. The program includes outfitting the buses with stop-arm cameras to catch drivers illegally passing school buses. The cameras are mounted on the stop sign that extends outward and whenever a bus is stopped and picking up or dropping off students, and they will automatically record any vehicle that passes by illegally. On Thursday, which happened to be “Operation Safe Stop Day” locally, Broome County Executive Jason Garnar was joined by representatives from several local school districts as he provided an update on the program.
