CAT, CAT Foundation to gift over $3M to COVID relief efforts

Mike Sabol/1470-100.3 WMBD DEERFIELD, Ill. Caterpillar, Inc. and the Caterpillar Foundation have pledged $3.4 million worth of COVID-19 relief dollars to foreign countries struggling with the virus. The foundation said $1 million will go towards medical equipment, like oxygen concentrators, oxygen plant optimization, and other critical supplies, in certain hot spots throughout India. Caterpillar India also promised $1.4 million to pay for oxygen, beds with ventilator access, vaccination drives, and temporary relief shelters. An additional $250,000 from the foundation will go towards helping Brazil with supplies. Finally, the foundation is giving $500,000 to the World Health Organization’s COVAX Initiative, aimed at increasing access to vaccinations throughout the world, and $250,000 to the Ad Council’s “It’s Up to You” vaccine education initiative.

Source: Getty Images The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meets today  to review the data that have led, “out of an abundance of caution,” to a recommended pause in the use of J&J’s COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. The focus is on six cases of what appears to be a very rare but severe type of blood clot, all occurring in women ages 18 to 48, with symptoms developing six to 13 days after vaccination. One woman died and another is hospitalized in critical condition. Nearly 7 million doses of the single-dose J&J vaccine have been given in this country. The concern is a clot known as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, occurring in combination with low blood platelets. Traditional treatments for clots, such as heparin, may actually be dangerous in this situation. The CDC and FDA are advising that anyone who has received the J&J vaccine and develops severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath within three weeks of being vaccinated should contact

Source: Getty Images The long-awaited federal government campaign to build confidence in COVID-19 vaccination, unveiled last week and unrolling as we speak, has at least three key components: (1) Television ads in English and Spanish conveying the message “We Can Do This” (2) a “nationwide network of local voices people know and trust,” dubbed the COVID-19 Community Corps, encompassing some 275 partner organizations, and (3) new social media frames “so Americans can display their choice to get vaccinated and encourage their friends and family to do the same.” The effort is “a campaign to increase vaccine confidence while reinforcing basic prevention measures.” The hope is that friendly, familiar, authoritative, credible, and persuasive voices will be heard, trusted, and heeded.
