The City Court in the western Russian city of Pskov on May 5 said the inclusion of RFE/RL contributor Lyudmila Savitskaya on the Justice Ministry’s list was lawful. “Lyudmila is not a foreign agent she, and RFE/RL journalists Denis Kamalyagin and Sergei Markelov, are Russian nationals providing objective news and information to their fellow citizens,” RFE/RL President Jamie Fly said in a statement.

© Getty Images Russian pranksters impersonating opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s chief of staff successfully convinced the Canadian House of Commons foreign affairs committee that they were the real thing, according to a Tuesday report. Vice News reported that Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexei Stolyarov posed as Leonid Volkov during an April 22 virtual meeting with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development to discuss Navalny s predicament. The meeting, which was conducted in camera, was not broadcast at the time and members were prohibited from speaking about the details of it once they left the committee room. During the meeting, the Canadian officials called on a person described as witness 1, who was supposed to be Volkov but was played by Kuznetsov and Stolyarov instead, according to Vice.

Parliamentarians from the UK, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia had all arranged video calls with a hoaxer claiming to be Leonid Volkov, chief of staff to imprisoned Russian anti-Putin politician Alexei Navalny. As the politicians tell it, they fell victim to a digital fake: a doppelgänger using “deepfake” technology created specially to trick them the latest example of Russia’s misinformation campaigns in the West.
