They joined the many tributes from statesmen and celebrities to ordinary people around the world for the Queen’s husband, who died at Windsor Castle on Friday, aged 99. Prince Philip, the longest-serving consort in British history, had spent nearly a month in hospital where he underwent a heart procedure before returning home 24 days before his death. His funeral will be held at St George’s Chapel in Windsor tomorrow (Saturday).

Farmland bird count shows farmers committed to conservation >More in © FLPA/Shutterstock A major count of farmland birds has revealed sightings of several rare species, highlighting the positive work being done by land managers to reverse the long-term decline in bird numbers. A total of 25 species from the Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern were recorded in this year’s count, with eight appearing in the 25 most frequently seen species list. Of these, starlings, fieldfare, lapwing and linnet were the four most abundant red-listed species recorded, with more than 112,000 spotted in total, which equates to 22% of all the birds counted.

Farmers take part in record breaking Big Farmland Bird Count 8 April 2021 | Surveys were undertaken in every county of England and across much of Scotland, NI and Wales A record number of farmers participated in this year s Big Farmland Bird Count despite February s bad weather and lockdown restrictions. Participation in the annual nationwide survey of farmland birds, which took place between 5-21 February, has more than doubled compared to last year. The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT), which organises the initiative, said 2,500 counts were turned in for 2021. This represents a 65 percent increase in the number submitted compared to 2020, which was also a record year.
