To the Editor:
Some may support Rep. Stefanik because they’re happy she’s trying to block Democrats from accomplishing things, but I’m holding her accountable every time she claims to be supporting and protecting the people of NNY.
Let’s start with a reminder that she voted down the recent Covid relief package; along with the checks for struggling individuals and the $12.7B specifically ear-marked for NYS.
In her 3/17/21 article, she touted her support for NNY agriculture because she backed the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. But it’s not clear how that helps upstate farms, since half of the $23.6B went to only 5% of agribusiness in the most heavily-concentrated agricultural US states. Nor is it clear how her support for the Farmers to Families Food Box Program helped our farmers; since the vendor companies chosen to profit came from 36 other states; not NY.

Hancock County food box distributions planned for April 20
ELLSWORTH The Farmers to Families Food Box Program, a component of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s COVID-19 emergency food assistance program, will hold food box distribution events in Hancock County on Tuesday, April 20, at the Acadia Gateway Center on Route 3 in Trenton and at the Bucksport United Methodist Church (3 River Road). Community members may pick up free food boxes on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 10 a.m. in Trenton and 2 p.m. in Bucksport, until all boxes have been distributed. No paperwork or registration is required.
Each box contains 1 gallon of milk, meat, shredded cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, potatoes and other produce. Those who are able may pick up food boxes for homebound neighbors and family members; per-vehicle box limits will be set according to the number of boxes available at distribution.
Free Food Box Distribution Begins Again Tomorrow
Starting tomorrow, Quincy Family YMCA will begin distributing food boxes every Thursday in April.
The Food Box Program, to date, has given out over 9,000 boxes of food to the community. Plus, with the program being extended, Quincy YMCA will able to deliver even more boxes of food (over 4,000 boxes), according the the Quincy Family YMCA Press Release.
The process will be the same; starting at 4 pm people are to drive to the Quincy Family YMCA parking lot where they will be able to get one box of fresh food for themselves or their family. In addition to the YMCA parking lot, you may also pick up a food box at the Bethel AME Church (9th & Oak) and The Salvation Army Family Services Center (501 Broadway), both in Quincy. Also, Unity High School in Mendon, Community Center for Christ Assistance Center in Camp Point, and Liberty Christian Church. So, if you can t make it to the YMCA there are other places to get a free box of food.
When dairy goes on sale
Relatively steady grocery store prices keep consumers coming back for milk and other dairy products. Grocers, then, must find another way to manage their inventories and margins to align with the changing tides of the prices they pay for these items. The answer, says Mike Brown of the Kroger Company, is sales.
“We rarely change list price. We try to balance with promotions,” explained Brown, Kroger’s dairy supply chain director, on the March 24
Hoard’s Dairyman DairyLivestream. Dairy provided two clear examples of this strategy in the wild price swings of 2020.
On the butter side, prices were the weakest they’d been in a long time. That allowed Brown’s stores to bring in more product, and then they ran promotions to move it.
