Patrisse Cullors – GettyImages In response to a recent story/press release we ran about a coalition of “BLM parents” protesting BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors, the following statement was issued by Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation: “Patrisse Cullors is the Executive Director of Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLMGNF). She serves in this role in a volunteer capacity and does not receive a salary or benefits. Patrisse has received a total of $120,000 since the organization’s inception in 2013, for duties such as serving as spokesperson and engaging in political education work. Patrisse did not receive any compensation after 2019.   To be abundantly clear, as a registered 501c3, BLMGNF cannot and did not commit any organizational resources toward the purchase of personal property by any employee or volunteer. Any insinuation or assertion to the contrary is categorically false.

1619 Project lead writer Nikole Hannah-Jones paid $25,000 for virtual lecture New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, lead author of the Times ’s “1619 Project,” was paid $25,000 for an online Zoom lecture given to the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. Through a Freedom of Information request, the right-wing news outlet Campus Reform obtained documentation detailing Hannah-Jones’s terms of compensation for the February 19 lecture. Additionally, the documents revealed that Hannah-Jones was partnered with the Lavin Agency, a talent agency that is “the world’s largest intellectual talent agency, representing leading thinkers for speaking engagements personal appearances, consulting, and endorsements,” according to its website. Hannah-Jones’s relationship with the agency suggests she regularly schedules events and is paid for them.

Context A real estate gossip site reported Cullors purchased a home in Topanga, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, for $1.4 million. On the heels of that report, internet memes and rumors went on to claim that Cullors used donations submitted to Black Lives Matter to pay for the property. However, the initial report did not state that she used BLM donations to buy the home, nor has evidence to that effect come to light. Furthermore, reports characterizing the purchase as extravagant do so without noting that prices for single-family homes in Los Angeles are considerably higher than in other markets. Origin
