By Blocking Marijuana Reform, Wisconsin Republicans Worsen the Drug Crisis

By Blocking Marijuana Reform, Wisconsin Republicans Worsen the Drug Crisis Part One of a Series: Robin Vos says he supports medical marijuana: Prove it! HighGradeRoots Getty Images/iStockphoto As the option to legalize marijuana in Wisconsin through the budget looms close, State Assembly Speaker Robin Vos speaks for Republican legislators, adopting an anti-progress stance repeating worn-out fear mongering arguments. Vos will not support marijuana reform through the budget, he announced on Thursday, Jan. 28. Despite the fact that a bipartisan supermajority of voters chose to support the adoption of recreational marijuana when the question was asked as an advisory referendum in 2018, Vos chose to go against the will of the people. “I am still trying to find a way to [legalize medical marijuana] so that people accept the fact that we are not going to legalize recreational marijuana,” Vos declared.

COMMENTARY: Curtailing absentee voting could crush GOP in future elections

By John A. Tures REPUBLICANS seem to be on a mission to reverse the 2020 election results. One step for the GOP involves making it harder to vote in the future. If these misguided initiatives succeed, America will be a little less democratic, but will see a lot more Democrats win at the ballot box. That’s because absentee voting has historically benefitted the Republican Party. The story begins with a moment people once used to describe racism in America. Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley was all set to be the first African American governor since Reconstruction. Exit polls showed that Bradley would win. But it turned out that Attorney General George Deukmejian narrowly prevailed in that 1982 California contest.

Lawsuit seeks to block Wisconsin GOP from hiring redistricting lawyers

MADISON - Four Madison teachers are suing Republican legislative leaders to block them from hiring private attorneys with taxpayer money in anticipation of a legal fight over drawing new congressional and legislative maps. The group of teachers, which includes the Madison Teachers Inc. president and active members of the union, argue Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu and Assembly Speaker Robin Vos hired outside counsel illegally because there is no legal challenge in which to represent them. Vos said the lawsuit is frivolous and brought by an activist liberal attorney for purposes of making money for himself and will prove to be a waste of taxpayer resources, referring to Lester Pines, the plaintiffs attorney who has fought Republicans in court for years in high-profile cases over GOP-written laws.
