Election 2021: Meet the school board candidates for District 5

(Photos provided by respective candidates) On Tuesday, voters head to the polls again – as four of the nine seats on the Milwaukee Board of School Directors are up for election. Candidates Marcelia Garcia and Henry Leonard are each running unopposed – in Districts 6 and 7, respectively. But there are contested races in Districts 4 and 5. In District 5, which includes parts of Harambee, Riverwest, Downtown and the East Side, Alex Brower and Jilly Gokalgandhi are vying to replace outgoing school board director Larry Miller. Early voting is open at City Hall until 5 p.m. Friday. You can find your Election Day polling place here.

About half of Milwaukee voters will elect new school board members April 6, with no incumbents running for four open seats. Two of the races have only one candidate on the ballot: Walker’s Point Center for the Arts executive director Marcela Garcia for the south side District 6 seat now held by Tony Baez; and recently retired Milwaukee Public Schools teacher Harry Leonard for the southwest District 7 seat held by Paula Phillips.  The north side District 4 seat is contested between Silver Spring Neighborhood Center Opportunity Youth Program Director Aisha Carr and North Side Rising organizer Dana Kelley.  Running for District 5 on the east side are Alex Brower, director of Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans; and Jilly Gokalgandhi, Equity in Education team member at American Family Insurance Institute.

In Milwaukee, four candidates will advance to the general election for two contested seats on the school board. With some absentee ballots yet uncounted, Aisha Carr and Dana Kelley led in District 4; and Alex Brower and Jilly Gokalgandhi led in District 5. Brower and Kelley ran on a socialist slate together backed by the teachers union.
