Sauk Co. confirms case of California coronavirus variant, believed to be one of first in the state

BARABOO, Wis. The Sauk County Health Department says it has detected a variant of the coronavirus in the county that is believed to be easier to pass from person-to-person.
The B.1.427 variant first came from California last summer. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is tracking cases of new variants in the state, but as of March 26 had yet to record a case of the B.1.427 variant, meaning this would be one of the first confirmed cases of the “California variant” of the virus.

On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported an additional 563 new confirmed COVID-19 cases. The state has averaged 470 new cases per day in the last week.
The state reported 10 new deaths, more than the seven-day average of 4 deaths, bringing the total death toll to 6,622. Ã

There are 6,825 active cases (1.2%) out of 577,195 total cases since the pandemic began. The patients recovered in about 97.7% of all cases (563,534 cases). Patients who are deemed as recovered either no longer exhibit the symptoms of COVID-19, or 30 days have passed since they tested positive.
The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported that 233 patients are currently hospitalized, of which 59 are in the Intensive Care Unit.

MADISON (WXOW) In its Thursday update, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said another 45,000 Wisconsin residents started their COVID-19 vaccine series during the past day.
Numbers from DHS show 1,810,361 people in the state have received at least one dose of the vaccine. That translates to 31.1 percent of state residents according to DHS. The figures show that 1,076,380 people, or 18.5 percent of the state s population, are now fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
In Western Wisconsin to date, 90,407 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine. It equates to 32.9 percent of the total number of people in Western Wisconsin. 57,031, or 20.8 percent, have completed the vaccine series.
