Native American woman rose from poverty to become a doctor | News, Sports, Jobs

Green Bay Press-Gazette BARABOO, Wis. Born to teenage parents who divorced when she was 10 and watching her mom struggle to overcome poverty and alcoholism, Dr. Amy DeLong had long battled self-doubt to find a place in this world. She is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and had felt, at first, that the only reason why she was able to attend the University of Michigan for her undergraduate studies was because of that institution’s efforts to draw more ethnic minorities. “I didn’t know if I was smart enough,” said DeLong, 51. “In the beginning, I felt like I didn’t belong. … I felt like, ‘I’m only here because I’m American Indian. ”

COMMUNITY VACCINATION CLINIC NOW OPEN AT UWGB-SHEBOYGAN

Vaccination Clinic at UWGB-Sheboygan Courtesy of Prevea Health   SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – The community vaccination clinic at the UW-Green Bay Sheboygan Campus is now open.  Operated by Prevea, shots are given by appointment only, but as of Wednesday all available slots were filled and new appointments will be scheduled when more vaccine becomes available from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.  Appointments should be made on MyPrevea.com; those 65 and older are eligible to make appointments under Phase 1A, but they are filling up quickly as the demand for vaccines is still outweighing the supply, and people may need to be patient, say health officials.

Rock County issues mask order; officials say nothing has changed

A flurry of actions on mask wearing hit Rock County almost at the same time Thursday afternoon. The bottom line is that everyone must wear masks in public, enclosed spaces with few exceptions—much like what has gone on before, Rock County Administrator Josh Smith said. Gov. Tony Evers had mandated mask wearing statewide for months, but the Legislature repealed that order Thursday. Evers and the county had expected that action, and both issued new mask orders soon afterward. County officials had planned for months in anticipation of the legislative action, Smith said. County officials expected that confusion would be a problem if the Legislature acted as it did and that some might question the legitimacy of Evers’ subsequent order.
