Wauwatosa EMS receives first dose of COVID-19 vaccine
WAUWATOSA, Wis. - EMS staff within the Wauwatosa Fire Department are now receiving the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, officials said in a news release on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is responsible for coordinating logistics and allocation of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Wauwatosa Health Department is working with local and state partners to get the job done. The Wauwatosa Health Department has enrolled as a vaccinator and is working on plans to receive and administer vaccines in 2021. Our team has been working hard over the past 10 months to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and we are excited to play a role in this first step toward ending it. MADISON, Wis. - The number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Wisconsin rose by 3,406 Wednesday, Jan. 6, officials with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported, for a total of 494,747.
There have been 5,039 deaths in the state, with 60 new deaths reported Wednesday by DHS officials.
Of the positive cases, 21,971 have required hospitalization (4.4%), while 461,729 have recovered (93.4%), making for 27,843 active cases (5.6%).

More than 2.8 million have been tested.

In Wisconsin and other states across the nation, the rollout of coronavirus vaccine so far has been slower than promised under the federal Operation Warp Speed initiative. Efforts to pick up the pace are complicated by decisions on who should be given vaccine priority along with supply and distribution issues.
Health care workers in Wisconsin began getting shots Dec. 14 and vaccination of nursing home residents has started. Both are in phase 1a, a priority group established by state and federal advisory groups.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Gov. Tony Evers and Wisconsin’s top health official defended the state’s rollout of coronavirus vaccine on Tuesday, urging patience and vigilance amid criticism that the process is not as organized or fast as it could be.
As of Monday, 266,675 doses of vaccine had been shipped to Wisconsin and 85,609 had been administered. Wisconsin ranks 10th lowest out of 12 states in the Midwest in getting a first dose of the vaccine to residents on a per capita basis, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
