The museum staff invites the public to participate safely in the Wisconsin Veterans Museum’s programming this winter through virtual platforms. “Despite being closed, we can still make our mission to tell Wisconsin veteran stories through engaging digital programming. The great staff here has assembled a wonderful lineup of programs that highlight many aspects of what we do and the stories we are charged to preserve and share,” said Chris Kolakowski, museum director. This winter, WVM staff presents these free events: Movie Night Discussions: Participants watch a designated movie and get together via Zoom with museum staff from 7 to 8 p.m. to discuss points of military and historic significance.

Wisconsin National Guard conducts shortened COVID-19 testing week due to New Year s holiday » Urban Milwaukee

  MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin National Guard specimen collection teams will gather COVID-19 specimens Monday through Wednesday this week due to the New Year’s holiday. Teams have collected a cumulative total of nearly 990,000 specimens at community-based testing sites and institutional-based testing missions. The Wisconsin National Guard’s collection activities support the Wisconsin Department of Health Service’s efforts to expand COVID-19 testing throughout the entire state. The teams, which are tailorable to meet the needs of a specific facility or community, are dispatched from a larger task force of several hundred Citizen Soldiers and Airmen. They have established mobile testing sites since early April at locations ranging from correctional facilities, health clinics and institutional facilities, to private businesses, senior-living facilities, and community-based testing sites.

Tony Evers and WDVA Secretary Mary Kolar announced the $620,940 in grants on Friday. “Our veteran community in Wisconsin is at its best when organizations work together to provide care and assistance to our nation’s heroes,” Evers said. “Especially after a difficult year for all of us, when many of our most vulnerable veterans are hurting, it is critical that we support these important organizations that can serve as a lifeline to veterans and their families.” Organizations in Janesville, La Crosse, Green Bay, Appleton and the Milwaukee area will receive funding from the program. Rock Valley Community Programs, Inc. in Janesville was awarded $5,000 to support the repair of 12 transitional housing service apartments.

Tony Evers announced on Friday with Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Secretary Mary Kolar announced $620,940 in grants were awarded to 16 registered nonprofit organizations that provide financial assistance, entrepreneurship training, or other services to Wisconsin veterans and their families, according to a news release. Our veteran community in Wisconsin is at its best when organizations work together to provide care and assistance to our nation s heroes, Gov. Evers said.
