State Supreme Court rules against voter purge

By Chris Conley Apr 9, 2021 11:30 AM MADISON, WI (WSAU) –  The Wisconsin State Supreme Court ruled Friday that voters who might have moved away should not be removed from the rolls. The ruling impacts about 69,000 people across the state who may no longer live in Wisconsin. The court’s 5-2 riling says keeping voter rolls up-to-date is the function of local election officials, not the state’s elections commission. The case dates back to 2019, when there were more than 200,000 “inactive” voters on the state’s approved voting list. Names were flagged for removal if they hadn’t voted in recent elections and if they hadn’t returned a postcard that was mailed to their most recent address. Some voters have since updated their voting records, or have confirmed that they now live out-of-state. The names that remain on the inactive list haven’t cast ballots since 2016.

Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling ending COVID order cost state millions

Wisconsin will lose tens of millions in food assistance for the month of May following a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling eliminating the state s public health emergency declaration. If the ruling had been made a day later, the funding would have been preserved, according to the Department of Health Services. Because the Wisconsin State Supreme Court chose to rule March 31 and not in April, families will not receive their emergency FoodShare allotments for May.. and each month thereafter, leaving tens of thousands of families without access to much-needed nutritious foods, DHS spokeswoman Elizabeth Goodsitt said.  Whether the additional funding for Wisconsin s food stamp program known as FoodShare would be lost had been in question until Wednesday, when Goodsitt confirmed the money was lost for May and would be in jeopardy for the future if lawmakers do not act to enact an emergency declaration.
