Three legislative proposals to protect the terms meat, milk and dairy products are moving ahead in the Wisconsin legislative session and are getting high marks from farm groups.
During a hearing of the Wisconsin Senate’s Agriculture Committee, the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) submitted testimony in support of the three bills saying that the legislation “recognizes the value of the trust our farmers have spent years building in the marketplace” and that it allows Wisconsin to “join other states whose food producers also rely on the accepted terminology in the markets.”
A national research study found that plant-based products labeled with dairy terms such as “cheese” led about one-quarter of consumers to believe that the product contained milk. “We would like Wisconsin agriculture to be positioned to join with those who stand to protect the food markets we have worked so hard to establish,” said Debi Towns, Senior Director of Governmental Relations for W

To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation (WFBF) is recognizing farmers through its Heroes of Hope campaign.
Heroes of Hope is focused on shedding light on rural heroes who have helped others through a challenging time, i.e., helping harvest crops, providing positivity in day-to-day work, uplifting other farmers to get through a demanding planting or harvest season, etc.
Heroes of Hope aims to identify people who have helped bring hope to farmers or businesses, in large or small ways. Members of the agriculture community are encouraged to nominate individuals who have made an impact on the way they conduct business, ordinarily and extraordinarily.

Wisconsin set another state record for total milk production in 2020, despite having fewer cows. The latest production figures from the USDA show that Wisconsin farmers produced 30.7 billion pounds of milk in 2020, slightly more than the previous record of 30.6 billion pounds set in 2019. Milk per cow rose to an all-time high of 24,408 pounds, up 256 pounds from the year earlier. As of January 1, there were 6,932 licensed milking herds in the state – down 360 from a year ago.
Note: California remains as the number one milk producing state with over 40.7 billion pounds produced last year. The state surpassed Wisconsin in 1993 as the leading milk production state and has remained in that position ever since.
