DVIDS - News - New technicians take on challenge for Fort McCoy s extensive forestry program

21 Forestry Technicians Tim Parry and Nick Randall were both hired in 2020 as the newest members of the Forestry Office at the Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division Natural Resources Branch (NRB). The forestry program at Fort McCoy covers tens of thousands of acres of forested land. Fort McCoy Forester Charles Mentzel said the mission of the forestry program plays an important role at the installation. “From a forestry perspective, our mission here, first and foremost, is to serve the Army and create training environments that better serve our Soldiers who support future missions in defense of this country,” Mentzel said. “By thinning trees, for example, the ones left will grow larger faster. This gives troops overhead cover and again allows for better maneuver space.

Nick Lindblad and Kyle Svachula share Fish of the Week honors with big bass from Texas

Provided Nick Lindblad and Nick Lindblad caught a 7.06-pounder on Dec. 14 on Lake Fork with friend Dennis Bubinas guiding. Not only is it a big bass, but a celebration of perseverance. I met Lindblad five years ago while he, then 13, was awaiting a heart transplant at Lurie Children’s. “Nick got his heart on 8-3-15,’’ his dad Dan texted. “He is doing great and even had the tumor on his spine removed and has learned to walk again.” Lindblad finished high school and started at Joliet Junior College. “He is 19 years old and has a whole life ahead of him,” his dad texted.

UW-L professor Jo Arney died Nov. 19. She was a professor of political science and academic affairs, and most recently served as director of Student Success. Contributed On a small hobby farm just outside of Coon Valley, you could often find Jo Arney sitting around a campfire with her friends, working in her garden or walking near the creek with her dogs. By Jo’s design, the farm, affectionately called “Skunk Hollow” by those who have loved it, was a place where all were welcome at the table. “There was stories and lots of laughter,” said Sarah Joslyn, a friend and colleague of Jo’s. “Time just passed so quickly.”
